The New England Patriots made one of the most surprising moves on Tuesday.

While it was clear that Mac Jones had the starting spot locked down, Bailey Zappe seemed to be right behind him. However, that isn't the case anymore.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Patriots have waived Zappe.

Moments later, the Athletic's Jeff Howe reported that they have also waived Malik Cunningham. While the two did not make the active roster, the Patriots are hopeful the two can be added to the practice squad, MassLive's Karen Guregian added.

Zappe had a fairly rough preseason, but still saw the most time during the preseason games.

In his rookie season, Zappe certainly made a name for himself, starting the season as the third-string quarterback before earning the backup spot. Mac Jones was injured and unable to play for a few weeks, with Zappe leading the team to two wins in his first two starts.

While Jones returned in Week 7, he clearly struggled in his first game back, with Zappe sent in to replace him.

This led to some questions about who should be the starter, but it was Jones for the rest of the season with Zappe behind him.

Jones is now the lone quarterback on the Patriots roster.
