The New England Patriots had limited space on their roster after selecting 12 players in the 2023 NFL Draft, so they were able to sign just four undrafted free agents.
We know the Patriots guaranteed Louisville QB Malik Cunningham $200k with a $30k signing bonus, but the financial commitments New England made to their other undrafted free agents weren’t known until Saturday.
We now know the contract details for Louisiana tight end Johnny Lumpkin and Appalachian State linebacker Jourdan Heilig.
TE Johnny Lumpkin
Three years, $2.705 million
$10k signing bonus
$30k in total guarantees
Cap hits:
2023: $753,333
2024: $918,333
2025: $1,033,334
LB Jourdan Heilig
Three years, $2.705 million
$10k signing bonus
$10k in total guarantees
Cap hits:
2023: $753,333
2024: $918,333
2025: $1,033,334
Lumpkin is a big tight end who projects best as a blocker in the NFL. The Patriots could use a physical tight end with two pass-catchers in Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki currently atop the depth chart.
Heilig barely played defense at Appalachian State. The Patriots’ special teams coaches liked what they saw from him in the kicking game.
The contract details for newly signed UDFA defensive tackle Justus Tavai are not yet known.
