It's official.
The New England Patriots will not be able to land one of their top wide receiver targets in free agency this year.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported on Monday morning that wide receiver Mike Evans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to a two-year deal.
The deal is reportedly worth 52 million, including $35 million in guaranteed money.
So this is bad news for the Patriots, who were hoping to land Evans in free agency, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
This is very notable considering that the Patriots have also been rumored to be interested in Baker Mayfield over the past few days.
But based on this latest news regarding Evan, that has also become a stretch. And that is because the wide receiver made it clear who he wants to play for.
“Mike wants to play with an elite quarterback in an offense that will showcase him — and be paid like a top wide receiver. He doesn’t want to play with a rookie QB. Winning a Super Bowl is a key priority,” Evans' agent said (via Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz).
So along with losing Evans, it seems the other dream of potentially landing Baker Mayfield may be over too.
Not the best news to start the week for Patriots fans.
