The New England Patriots didn’t have an open spot on their 90-man roster for long.

The Patriots signed San Diego State undrafted free-agent defensive tackle Justus Tavai on Thursday, sources told A to Z Sports. That fills the spot left vacant when New England waived offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste on Thursday.

The Tavai name might sound familiar. Tavai’s brother, Jahlani, has been a linebacker with the Patriots since 2021.

Tavai, a transfer from Hawaii, signed with New England after a successful tryout. He ran a 5.14-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in March at 6-foot-1, 285 pounds. He also ran a 4.74-second 3-cone drill with a 4.77-second short shuttle, 28-inch vertical leap and 8-feet, 6-inch broad jump. He bench pressed 225 pounds 25 times.

Tavai registered 18 total pressures last season at San Diego State with 17 defensive stops, per PFF. He recorded 37 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2022.

Tavai becomes the fourth undrafted free agent to sign with New England, following quarterback Malik Cunningham, tight end Johnny Lumpkin and linebacker Jourdan Heilig.

The Patriots have a recent history of rostering brothers. They had defensive backs Devin and Jason McCourty, and wide receiver Cody Hollister and tight end Jacob Hollister, on their roster at the same time.

Tavai will compete for a roster spot with fellow defensive tackles Davon Godchaux, Lawrence Guy, Christian Barmore, Carl Davis, Daniel Ekuale, Sam Roberts and Jeremiah Pharms.
