Patriots signing JuJu Smith-Schuster to fill major void on offense
The New England Patriots are signing a top wide receiver in free agency.
The Patriots have agreed to terms with wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, the wide receiver confirmed in a tweet Wednesday.
The Patriots and Smith-Schuster had been working on a deal on Wednesday.
The Patriots lost wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the Las Vegas Raiders on a three-year, $33 million contract. Smith-Schuster also signed a three-year deal worth $33 million a source told The Score’s Jordan Schultz.
Meyers had a response for that on Twitter: "cold world."
Smith-Schuster, like Meyers, can work outside and out of the slot. He caught 78 passes for 933 yards with three touchdowns with the Kansas City Chiefs last season. He has 401 career receptions for 4,788 yards with 29 touchdowns since entering the NFL as a second-round pick in 2017.
His best season came in 2018 with the Pittsburgh Steelers when he caught 111 passes for 1,426 yards with seven touchdowns.
Smith-Schuster joins DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne and Tyquan Thornton atop the Patriots’ wide receiver depth chart. New England could add another wide receiver option via trade or in the draft since Nelson Agholor is also a free agent.
The Patriots clearly believed that Smith-Schuster was either a better fit for their offense or provided higher upside. We'll find out over the next three seasons if they made the right choice.
