It seems Bill Belichick has always had an appreciation for the New England Patriots latest roster addition.

Speaking on SiriusXM Radio (transcribed by ESPN’s Mike Reiss), former Patriots running back James White provided some insight into Belichick's thoughts on Ezekiel Elliott.

"I know Bill Belichick has talked about some of the best backs in the league and I know he's a big fan of Zeke," White said on SiriusXM Radio. "Whenever we would compete against those guys, he would always talk about how much he wanted to have him on his roster."

Elliott provides some much needed depth for the Patriots running back room.

Rhamondre Stevenson is coming off a breakout season and is expected to still be the top guy. However this signing provides the Patriots with a vital weapon who can provide an additional level to the offense during important points in the game.

"Rhamondre Stevenson is going to be the lead guy, the bell cow guy, but obviously Zeke is a proven veteran," White said. "He's great in the red zone, so I'm sure they'll use him in the running game there. He's great on third down and picking up blitzes, so I think he'll have a huge impact when it comes to that. I think it's just adds depth to the running back room."

Elliott signed a a one-year deal with the Patriots that can be worth up to $6 million with incentives. This came after he visited with the team in late July, with Mac Jones and Elliott pictured having dinner together in Boston following the workout.

Drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round (fourth overall pick) in the 2016 NFL Draft, Elliott has 8,262 rushing yards and 68 touchdowns across 103 games played across his seven years with the Cowboys,. On the receiving side, he has recorded 305 receptions for 2,336 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The deal was reportedly set to be made official on Tuesday morning, with Elliott set to fly out with the team to Green Bay for joint practices with the Packers.
