Malcolm Butler is not done with football just yet.
The former New England Patriots cornerback is attempting an NFL comeback, as he will work out for the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday, KPRC’s Aaron Wilson reports.
"Malcolm is motivated and in great playing shape," Butler's agent, Justin Allen, said to Wilson. "He worked his way back. I feel like his passion and love for the game is there and he has a lot to give to the secondary in Atlanta."
Butler is most remembered for being the hero of Super Bowl XLIX, when the Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks in dramatic fashion. The cornerback was responsible for intercepting Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson at the goal line with less than a minute remaining, which ultimately sealed the victory for New England.
His first stint with the Patriots spanned four years, signing with the Tennessee Titans in 2018 after he ended his time in New England on a bad note. In Super Bowl LII, the Patriots lost to the Philadelphia Eagles with Butler not playing any defensive snaps and appeared to be benched.
He spent the following three seasons with the Titans before being released in 2021. Butler then signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals less than a month later, but before the season started he chose to retire.
However, he began his NFL comeback in 2022, signing a two year deal with the Patriots in March, but was ultimately placed on injured reserve before being released at the end of August.
Butler will have a short time to prove himself, with rosters for all teams having to get down to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
