Bringing back the top New England Patriots stars was a main priority for Jerod Mayo this offseason. And he clearly has done a pretty solid job of that.
Among the players that were re-signed was team captain Hunter Henry. And he emphasized how Mayo played a large part in that decision.
“I’m excited for this new start. To be a part of that is exciting. I have a lot of pride in this organization too," the tight end said. "They brought me here three years ago now and I’m just excited. I think it’s going to be cool to be a part of the new era here with Jerod. Like I said, I always admired him as a coach, as a person, honestly as a player too. He was a great player. So I’m excited to hopefully be a part of that new change.
“I mean once it started and I knew Jerod was the coach, I was fired up and excited to work with him. And like I said, he’s a great dude, great coach, and I’m excited to kind of grow with him and be a leader for him in this locker room, and start getting things on the right track.”
Henry signed a three year deal worth $27 million with a max value of $30 million in March.
He first joined the Patriots in 2021 on a three-year contract, finishing with 133 receptions for 1,531 yards with 17 touchdowns in 48 games during his time in New England.
And based on his time in Foxborough, he didn't want to leave.
“I just wanted to be here. I’m excited. I love this locker room, love this area, love this fan base, love this organization," Henry said. "And I’ll just keep reiterating that I wanted to be a part of this and didn’t like how last year went, how the last two years have went. And want to be a part of that change."
