Patriots working out receiver familiar with Bill O'Brien, Mac Jones
New England has just five wide receivers under contract
Stop us if you've heard this one before, but the New England Patriots reportedly are set to work out an undersized slot receiver.
The Patriots are scheduled to work out free-agent wide receiver Slade Bolden, ESPN's Mike Reiss reported Tuesday. As Reiss noted, Bolden spent three seasons at Alabama with Patriots quarterback Mac Jones. He then played the 2021 season under current New England offensive coordinator. and former Alabama OC Bill O'Brien.
Bolden, a 2022 undrafted free agent, spent part of the 2022 season on the Baltimore Ravens' injured reserve list. He didn't accumulate any preseason or regular season stats.
The 5-foot-11, 189-pound receiver caught 68 passes for 712 yards with four touchdowns with the Crimson Tide while adding 148 yards on 22 punt returns, 67 yards on five kick returns and 11 yards on six carries. He also made six total tackles.
Bolden ran a 4.66-second 40-yard dash at last year’s NFL Scouting Combine with a 9-foot, 8-inch broad jump and 1.52-second 10-yard split. He bench pressed 11 reps, registered a 36-inch vertical leap, 4.03-second short shuttle and 7.01-second 3-cone drill at his pro day.
New England certainly could use more bodies at wide receiver with Kendrick Bourne, DeVante Parker and Tyquan Thornton on the 90-man roster and Lynn Bowden and Tre Nixon signed to future deals. The Patriots also have special-teamers Matthew Slater and Raleigh Webb on their roster.
Bolden certainly wouldn’t be a high-profile signing for New England, but he would give the Patriots another wide receiver familiar with O’Brien and Jones.
