It's no secret that the New England Patriots will be looking to add a quarterback next season after all the offensive struggles this year.

And in many of the mock drafts that have been done, there is one name that has been the Patriots pick, whether they have the second or third overall.

The player in question: UNC quarterback Drake Maye.

And the Patriots just got one step closer to getting that top quarterback.

Maye posted on X, formerlly known as Twitter, officially declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Maye started at the University of North Carolina in 2021, but redshirted his freshman season. He then earned the starting job in 2022 after Sam Howell, the Washington Commanders quarterback, left for the NFL. That year, he threw for 4,321 yards and 38 touchdowns, leading UNC to a 9-5 record overall.

Maye was named the ACC Player of the Year, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and ACC Rookie of the year in 2022.

And he followed it up with an impressive performance this season, recording 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns. UNC finished the season with an 8-4 record. They are still set to compete in the Duke's Mayo Bowl against West Virginia on Dec. 27.

The Chicago Bears currently hold the top pick and are expected to take Caleb Williams. With the second overall pick (or even third), Maye is clearly the next best quarterback and would be a solid choice for New England, who is in need of a complete rebuild on offense.

If he joins the Patriots and the team can surround him with quality weapons, next season could look completely different for New England.
