Lamar Jackson is very excited about the Baltimore Ravens' latest signing, and he made sure to let everyone know on Wednesday.
The Ravens signed Malik Cunningham off the New England Patriots practice squad on Tuesday, reuniting the rookie with Jackson. The two played together at Louisville.
Yet, with that, he also took a subtle dig at Malik Cunningham's former team.
"Great quarterback. I've seen it first hand when he was a freshman at Louisville," Jackson said. "Explosive. Can throw the ball to anyone on the field. Make guys miss. He can do it all."
Going undrafted, the Patriots took a chance on Cunningham and the rookie certainly made a strong case during the preseason. He put on an impressive performance in some of the games, providing a necessary spark for the offense, while also showcasing his mobility and speed.
However, despite his efforts in the preseason, Cunningham was never given a true chance. And that's combined with the continued quarterback controversy in New England.
So when the Ravens provided him with an opportunity to reunite with a familiar face and sign to the active roster, Cunningham had to take it.
Jackson has been very complimentary of Cunningham since he began his NFL career, and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh had also seen enough to want to give him a chance.
The coach spoke on the decision to sign him on Wednesday as well.
"It's definitely different, unique situation. From a quarterback perspective, it's a future type of a movie," Harbaugh said. "He was out there practicing at quarterback today early in practice, but he'll also work at wide receiver and work on special teams too. And things he was doing in New England already, that's what he's doing here."
Cunningham's skill set is unique, being able to play at multiple different positions.
"He's a very talented person so he'll contribute in every way he can, but we'll stay with the four quarterbacks," Harbaugh added. "That's the way we'll do it and he'll contribute in a lot of different ways."
