At Jerod Mayo's press conference, a few players were at the Gillette Stadium to show their support for the new Patriots head coach. Among them was quarterback Mac Jones.
However, it seems his attendance rubbed some people the wrong way. And one person wasn't afraid to speak out about it.
According to the Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard, one team source had an issue with the way Jones showed up to Mayo's press conference.
"He was in his workout gear which is ironic since he cleared his entire locker at the end of the season. Not a single hanger. Completely empty. … I mean, come on man," a team source reportedly told Bedard.. "Everyone's watched him play, they've watched him act like a prima donna. The team is sick of it, everyone's sick of it."
Him clearing out his locker is very telling, with even Jones knowing that his future with the Patriots is in doubt. And Mayo seemed to make it clear that he is going to use the No. 3 pick to draft "the best player for a position that’s very important." That sure sounds like it'll be a quarterback.
Yet him showing up in workout clothes isn't irregular, with Jones still using the facility and the workout room despite the season having ended.
Jones had a strong rookie season under the direction of Josh McDaniels, finishing with 3,801 passing yards and 22 passing touchdowns along with 129 rushing yards. He was named to the Pro Bowl in his first season, also being named to the Pro Football Writers Association's All-Rookie team.
However, in his second year he took a serious decline after McDaniels left to take the head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders and it was Matt Patricia and Joe Judge who took over the offense. He finished his second season with 2,997 passing yards and 14 passing touchdowns along with 102 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
And despite ownership making the official decision to bring in Bill O'Brien as the offensive coordinator, things continued to get worse for Jones. He had his worst season, finishing with 2,120 passing yards and 10 passing touchdowns along with 96 rushing touchdowns. He was even benched for Bailey Zappe midseason, getting demoted to the emergency quarterback rather than just the backup in the season finale.
However, it is worth pointing out that Jones was one of a handful of players to actually be at the press conference in person. While Belichick seemed to give up on Jones, it seems Mayo could give the quarterback one final shot. And while they are expected to bring in a rookie, Jones could remain on the roster for the final season of his rookie deal.
At this point, Jones future is completely unknown. And while he might have cleaned out his locker, that doesn't mean Mayo won't give him one more opportunity. But the main question is can he change some opinions in the building.
We'll have to see.
