It's no surprise that the New England Patriots quarterback room was in complete shambles during the 2023 season. With Mac Jones earning the starting role early on, but Bailey Zappe eventually taking over, it was truly a rocky road.

But how bad did things really get?

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer shined some light on this, going back to when it all started during the 2022 season. He reported that Jones was "well-liked early on, but, over time, lost support in the building."

"And the quarterback room he was in the last two years got toxic, to the point where Bailey Zappe, as a rookie, sometimes watched tape in the receiver room," Breer added.

Jones losing support is no surprise. The quarterback was truly struggling after his rookie year, leading to him make numerous mistakes that often led to turnovers and even cost the team the game at times.

It got to the worst place last season when the defense was expressing their frustration publicly over the offense's lack of production, and all of that started with Jones.

A recent report further emphasized how it truly seemed Jones' time in New England was over since his communication with head coach Bill Belichick was nonexistent by the final game of the season.

However, with Jerod Mayo taking over, it is unknown if Jones still has a future in New England. And the rumors grew once again after he attended Mayo's introductory press conference alongside a few of his other teammates.

So Breer concluded the mailbag with his opinion, explaining that Jones' history would make it a "a tough environment for Jones to try and move forward in."

And he is completely right.
