FOXBOROUGH, Mass – Robert Kraft wanted to make one thing clear to reporters on Monday morning.

“This whole situation is on me," Kraft told reporters. "I feel terrible for Jerod because I put him in an untenable situation.”

Less than two hours after the New England Patriots' final game of the 2024/25 season, it was announced that the organization had fired head coach Jerod Mayo after just one year. And this was very big considering Mayo was chosen as the successor to Bill Belichick.

But, Kraft was able to acknowledge that it wasn't the right fit.

“I know that he has all the tools as a head coach to be successful in the league. He just needed more time before taking the job," the Patriots owner explained. "In the end, I’m a fan of this team first, and now I have to go out and find a coach who can get us back to the playoffs and hopefully championships.”

It was the word 'untenable' that truly jumped out, and he was asked what about this season made it that way.

“I don’t like losing. I don’t like losing the way we lost,” Kraft replied. “I just — just things were not developing the way we would have liked and it was time to move on.”

Not only did the Patriots finish with a 4-13 record, but they also won the one game that they weren't supposed to. Had New England lost to the Buffalo Bills in the season finale, they would have had the No. 1 overall pick. But a win leaves them without a head coach and the No. 4 selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.

So now, we wait and see what happens during the coaching search.
