The New England Patriots are spending time with LSU defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy before his pro day Wednesday, according to a source.
The Patriots are meeting with Roy on Tuesday night. Roy, who’s 6-foot-3, 305 pounds, is a projected fourth-round pick, per DraftScout.com. He posted 49 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, .5 sack and a fumble recovery in his junior year before declaring early for the 2023 NFL Draft.
He added five QB hits and 27 total pressures, per PFF. As a sophomore in 2021, the former four-star recruit generated 32 total pressures including eight QB hits. His 675 total defensive snaps ranked 18th in FBS among interior defenders, per PFF.
Roy didn’t fully participate in NFL Scouting Combine workouts due to a hamstring injury. He ran a 5.00-second short shuttle and 8.01-second 3-cone drill.
The Patriots could use more youth on their defensive line to join Christian Barmore, Carl Davis, Daniel Ekuale, Davon Godchaux, Lawrence Guy, DaMarcus Mitchell, Jeremiah Pharms, Sam Roberts and Deatrich Wise. Guy, 33, Davis, 31, Ekuale, 29, Godchaux, 28 and Wise, 28, have all been in the NFL since at least 2018. Barmore, 23, was a second-round pick in 2021, Roberts, 24, was a sixth-round pick last year, and Mitchell, 24 and primarily a special-teamer in 2022, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent. Pharms, 26, spent last season on the Patriots’ practice squad.
Roy split his time between playing nose tackle and three-technique defensive tackle last season at LSU. He’s a versatile interior defensive lineman who can create disruption in the middle of the defense.
