Stefon Diggs’ decision to join Patriots led by fate looks even better following revealing comments during Super Bowl week
Stefon Diggs was close to not signing with the Patriots last offseason, but fate brought him to New England and the Super Bowl.
The New England Patriots shocked everyone this season by coming out on top in the AFC, and any slight difference in the season could’ve steered them in another direction.
The front office deserves a ton of credit for being aggressive this past offseason and investing the salary cap into free agency to build around quarterback Drake Maye going into his second season. One of the players they brought in was wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and he revealed at the Super Bowl media day that it almost didn’t happen for many reasons.
Stefon Diggs reveals he almost didn’t join the New England Patriots last offseason
Sometimes fate has a funny way of putting you on the path you’re meant to be on, and Diggs is a testament to that with how the last two years have gone for him. The Houston Texans traded for Diggs while he was on the Buffalo Bills, but they also wiped out the final three seasons of his contract. He was honestly a one-year rental with the option of becoming a free agent after the season, or he could negotiate a long-term deal with the Texans.
Then, things took a turn for the worse when Diggs tore his ACL after just eight games with the Texans, and people started writing him off. Diggs didn’t care, however, and it was honestly a turning point that brought him to the Patriots, he says.
“From my experience with God, like I learned from experience, look at all that,” Diggs said. “Like I could have still been in Houston if I never gotten hurt. I could have still been in Houston if I hadn’t changed whatever the language in our contract from a three-year to a one-year, like, a lot of things could be different. So I don’t think anything happens by mistake.”
Diggs’ injury wasn’t the only thing that impacted his 2026 season with the Patriots, as he also revealed that he almost went to the Denver Broncos as well.
Stefon Diggs considered going to the Denver Broncos before signing with the Patriots
Diggs had to test free agency, and he had many options, and the Broncos were under strong consideration, he said, and he was close to landing in Denver.
“I just got a good relationship with somebody who’s on their [Broncos] staff,” Diggs added. He was in Buffalo. He actually taught me the offense in Buffalo. He spent a lot of time with me, so it was close. But just like everything you know, we were just trying to figure it out.”
Stefon Diggs obviously made the right choice
After making his decision to join the Patriots, Diggs went on to redeem himself as the team’s leading receiver with 1,086 yards this season to help propel them to the Super Bowl. Diggs has come close to making it to the big game many times, and of course, they had to beat the Broncos, who he almost joined, to get there.
