How bad did things really get between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick towards the end of the quarterback's time in New England?
He answered all of that in the Patriots 'Dynasty' documentary that is premiering this Friday. And with that, he revealed what really caused him to leave the team that he had spent his career with.
“Me andCcoach Belichick, we did what we loved and competed for 20 years together,” Brady said (via The Athletic's Chad Graff). “But I wasn’t going to sign another contract (in New England) even if I wanted to play until (I was) 50. Based on how things had gone, I wasn’t going to sign up for more of it.”
The documentary has a total of 10 episodes with two dropping every Friday for the next five weeks. It follows the Patriots from 2000 to 2020, following Tom Brady as he and Bill Belichick led the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships.
And then Brady ultimately left the team, heading to Tampa Bay to finish his career. It wasn't the ending any of the fans wanted.
Multiple players are interviewed, detailing what it was like to play for the team and specifically Bill Belichick. Even Matthew Slater didn't hold back, simply saying that "It was brutal."
And according to Graff, Wes Welker compared Brady to an abused dog for continually going back to work for Belichick. That's how bad things got.
“Tom and I had a number of discussions about how Bill treated him. Tommy is very sensitive," Patriots owner Robert Kraft said. "He was always looking for Bill’s approval, almost in a father-son kind of way. And that’s not Bill’s style ever to give that.”
More will be revealed once the documentary is officially released, but this is just a snapshot of the truth that will be told over the next month.
