The New England Patriots are in need of a wide receiver and there is a talented one on the market right now.
Cooper Kupp was released by the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday, but currently had numerous suitors. And with that, there are some teams that are willing to pay his high asking price while others are wary.
The Patriots are one of the teams that are cautious.
The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports that Kupp's asking price has been as high as $15 million a year, but "he'd take less for a preferred destination." However, "if teams are willing to hit $15M, it would widen the list of landing spots."
MassLive's Mark Daniels also reported that the Patriots have interest in Kupp, but aren't sure they are willing to pay the high asking price.
However, this should be a no-brainer for New England.
They have the money to land Kupp, and it was always known that they might have to overpay to bring in a talented player. There aren't many receivers on the market and it's not ideal to have to draft for need rather than just taking the best players available.
Plus, they have Drake Maye and it's very important to surround him with the right receivers.
It was reported by the Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan earlier this week, that Kupp is "curious about the prospect of playing in New England and has shared that curiosity with some close to him."
"Kupp has personal and professional connections to Patriots, starting with ex-college teammate and fellow wideout Kendrick Bourne, who has repeatedly advocated for Kupp to come to New England on social media. The two remain friendly, sources say," Callahan wrote.
The Patriots have been targeting free agents who have ties to the new coaching staff, and Kupp would be no different. He spent time with Thomas Brown, who is New England's passing game coordinator and tight ends coach, from 2020-2022 in Los Angeles.
Kupp has spent his entire career with the Rams, having played in 104 games and recorded 634 receptions for 7,776 yards and 57 touchdowns across eight season. Specifically last season, he had 67 receptions for 710 yards and six touchdowns across 12 games.
Plus, he's also a Super Bowl MVP, having earned that honor in 2022 when the Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals.
At this point, they should just get the deal done.
