FOXBOROUGH, Mass – Bill Belichick is arguably the greatest coach in the history of the National Football League, so each individual that gets to play for him often explains how much they have learned.
And Deatrich Wise is no different.
"I'm very honored that I was drafted to his organization. I mean, he taught me a lot about the football game and everything," Wise told reporters on Wednesday. "I kind of joke every now and then again that I'm getting my master's and PhD in football."
Since being drafted by the Patriots in 2017, Wise has spent his entire career in New England. So he's had a lot of time to learn from Belichick.
And because of that, he had the perfect response when asked what Belichick would be like as a professor.
"He's that professor who has that monotone voice and he knows a lot," Wise said with a smile. "He's been around the game a long time, so he's that guy who's always talking in the same tone every day and you got to listen. If not you'll be falling asleep."
Wise was then asked if he has ever fallen asleep in one of those meetings.
"I plead the fifth," he said with a laugh.
And it was followed up with an additional question, with one reporter wondering if Bill Belichick takes any extra credit.
"I don't know," Wise said. "I think early in his career he didn't take extra credit, but I think now, he'll probably take extra credit here and there. But you have to work really hard for it."
In his seven seasons with the Patriots, Wise has 282 total tackles, 29 sacs, one forced fumbles, and nine passes defended.
"You have to work for your A's. It's a hard class."
His efforts certainly deserves a top grade.
