I am the first to admit that I thought the Patriots should lean more towards Mike Vrabel as the next head coach in New England. He had coaching experience, whereas Jerod Mayo has yet to even be a coordinator.
But, there is one thing that has already proven me wrong. And I am happy to admit it.
The response to the announcement from past and present Patriots players is unmatched, with one free agent even making it known that he wants to return since Mayo will be leading the charge.
Now don't get me wrong. I thing Mayo is an incredible coach. However, my hesitation was as the successor to Bill Belichick, there was going to be a lot of high expectations. And with Vrabel, he had experience on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
But former Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, who played alongside Mayo, had the perfect way to describe this decision.
"I think you're getting the best of both worlds with Jerod Mayo," he said on ESPN's Get Up. "There's a little bit of Bill Belichick, but then there's not… They got the right guy here in Jerod Mayo."
Specifically, linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. spoke with A to Z Sports recently and mentioned that his free agent decision will be based off what happens with Mayo. And immediately after the news was released, he spoke his mind.
Robert Kraft knew what he was doing, and the players are clearly all for it. Let's see if he can get them back to their winning ways.
