After his disastrous outing against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, much has been said and written about New England Patriots left tackle Will Campbell. The rookie left tackle was repeatedly exposed in the Super Bowl on the biggest stage possible.

With everyone, football expert or not, weighing in on the Will Campbell arm length discourse, Patriots’ head coach Mike Vrabel took to the stand to defend his rookie tackle and put any discussion around a position switch to bed.

Will Campbell will not move to guard

Mike Vrabel was adamant that the Patriots will not be changing Campbell’s position anytime soon. “He is 22 years old. He’s our left tackle… we’re not moving him to guard or center or tight end or anywhere else. I don’t know what else to tell you.”

I don’t disagree with the decision. It’s a tough call that they’re in, but Campbell’s issues came more from his technique than “arm length” in the Super Bowl. Additonally, Campbell had been battling a grade 3 MCL tear all throughout the playoffs, which explains why his allowed production exponentially increased in the playoffs.

I’ve already written a bit about what Campbell needs to do moving forward if he wants to succeed at tackle, but the Patriots have to meet him halfway as well. If Vrabel is this adamant about Campbell remaining at tackle, New England needs a change at offensive line coach, in my opinion.

If they can continue developing his fundamentals, he can succeed as an NFL tackle, regardless of his arm length. He needs the right coach at the helm in order to do that, however. A move to guard might wreck his confidence, something they can ill afford.

It’s no surprise Vrabel is ready to go to bat for Campbell. He spent the entire offseason defending Campbell, and Campbell was good for the Patriots pre-injury. There’s potential for a great player there, and Vrabel knows it. One bad game won’t define his career, but it’d probably be a good idea for Campbell to stay off of social media for awhile.
