FOXBOROUGH, Mass – This is set to be a very important offseason for New England Patriots offensive lineman Trent Brown.
The offensive tackle is on track to become a free agent at the end of the 2023 season, and, specifically, many are wondering if there is a possibility he will re-sign with the Patriots.
Either way, people are wondering what happens next with the veteran. Fortunately for them, Brown didn't hold back when asked about how far talks with the Patriots have gone.
"We already had that opportunity," Brown told A to Z Sports. "We have had plenty of opportunities to get that done. I mean, I'm not opposed to it, but we are at the end of the season…
"… It'd be kind of like, I feel like I'd be kind of doing myself a disservice to not see what other opportunities are out there, just at this point."
After a short stint with the Patriots in 2018 where the team went on to win a Super Bowl, Brown left to join the Las Vegas Raiders, but was traded back to New England in 2021 with two yeas still left on his deal. In 2022, the Patriots re-signed him to a two-year, $13 million contract.
His expectation was to be re-signed by the Patriots once again, but that didn't happen -even though he was told it would.
"Yeah. It would have been done when they said it was going to get done. When I signed the last one," Brown said. "The one I signed two years ago, I was told that I would, if I had a good year then I would; we should get it fixed. It never happened."
However, he is aware of the challenges and changes that have impacted the team, which might have caused the talks to stall.
"Understandably though. I mean there has been a lot of sh** going on, a lot of moving parts. No offensive coordinator. So it's all good," Brown added. "Like I said, it is what it is. I'll be where God wants me to be."
Having already been eliminated from playoffs, there are just two games left for Brown and the Patriots to show what they can do. And on January 7, when the Patriots finish the season at home against the Jets, it could be the last time the offensive tackle lines up for the Patriots.
After that? Well, as with most things in the NFL: only time will tell.
"I'll cross that bridge when we get there, really. It's a long way away. Like I've been saying since the beginning of the season, I'll be where God wants me to be."
