The Arizona Cardinals are signing running back Tony Jones Jr. off the Saints practice squad.
Cardinals starting RB James Conner is dealing with a knee injury. Jones Jr. could jump right into the action for Arizona.
Jones Jr. was a useful depth player for New Orleans. He provided solid special teams play and was a hard worker on offense.
In four games with the Saints this year, Jones Jr. totaled rushing 70 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. The veteran was important for the Saints during Alvin Kamara's suspension. He's a powerful runner and willing blocker.
Now, the Saints will proceed with Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, and Jamaal Williams as their main runners. Williams is currently on IR, and he won't return for a couple more weeks though. Jordan Mims could be elevated from the practice squad.
Jones Jr. is a tough depth loss for New Orleans, but it happens with players on the practice squad. They could look to add another veteran backup for the time until Williams returns from injury.
