It is no secret that an ailing Derek Carr played in Week 4 for the New Orleans Saints.
The offense struggled, and the defense didn't fare much better. New Orleans dropped to 2-2, and more questions arose for their coaching staff.
One game-changing play happened late in the second quarter. After their defense snagged an interception, the Saints offense turned the ball right back over on a fullback dive. They tried to get off their goal line with FB Adam Prentice, and Dennis Allen explained their decision on Monday.
Allen said that they chose to run the play with Prentice rather than a QB sneak with Carr due to his injury.
There are two major flaws with that thinking.
Firstly, you have Taysom Hill. Use him, a more experienced and powerful runner, to get off your own goal line. It is much more unlikely that he fumbles – compared to Prentice.
Secondly, and more importantly, the Saints ran a QB sneak with Carr later in the game for just two yards.
They clearly weren't that worried about a potential re-injury if they chose that play later in the game. Allen's defense of the call just doesn't make much sense.
It's little aspects of games, like this one, that turns a winnable game into a blowout for the Saints. They must be better.
