In today's NFL which features more spread-out offenses, no team can have too many weapons at the wide receiver position.
The New Orleans Saints are already pretty loaded with Michael Thomas and Chris Olave leading the way plus Rashid Shaheed and Bryan Edwards on the roster. However, a recent mock draft from The Athletic has them getting a gift in the second round.
New Orleans took Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers with the 40th overall pick.
James Foster of the A to Z Sports Film Room did a breakdown of what Flowers brings to the table last month, labeling him the most complete receiver in this draft class.
"This receiver class has a lot of players that are good route runners and separators but they lack traditional NFL size, and Boston College receiver Zay Flowers is my favorite of those receiver prospects," said Foster.
"Zay Flowers runs as complete of a route tree as any receiver in this class," Foster said. "He separates effectively at all three levels of the field and in college, he split time between lining up in the slot and outside. So, I think he's a fit for a wide range of teams because he offers positional versatility and within whichever team he gets drafted to he can run the entire route tree and be a fully productive member of that offense."
The versatility Foster mentions is quite interesting. At 5'9" and 183 pounds, Flowers logged 1,767 snaps as an outside receiver as opposed to 797 in the slot per Pro Football Focus.
Flowers has the skill set to not only be effective attacking defenses vertically but horizontally as well on crossing routes and slants with his 4.42 speed, making him a matchup nightmare.
Dropping to the second round is probably not a high possibility for Flowers with how sought-after he is. However, the NFL draft is unpredictable and big-time players fall all the time. If Flowers is there at 40 the Saints should highly consider bringing him on board, he's too dynamic of a weapon not to.
