The New Orleans Saints may get their starting quarterback back in Week 9 against the Carolina Panthers. Derek Carr has been seeking out some extra info regarding his injury, and he reached out to a Saints legend to do exactly that recently.

Brees talks injury with Carr

During his media availability, Carr revealed that he's been talking with former Saints quarterback Drew Brees about trying to work his way back from injury. Brees suffered the same oblique injury about a decade ago.

"Don't let your mechanics suffer… because then you won't feel the same."

— Brees to Carr

Carr mentioned "doing it the right way" when discussing how he wants to practice the motions and everything he will need to do in a game, effectively. It's clearly a tenuous process for him and the training staff to make sure they are calculated in his return to action in a safe manner.

The QB said that he legitimately could not throw once he suffered the injury. The pain was not the worst he has felt, but it was a functionality issue.

Carr also mentioned that he will be back to close to 100% when he returns. The QB practiced on Wednesday. He's been doing throwing sessions since last week, but today was a bit more ramped up for him.

The Saints starter said that he felt great after practice on Wednesday. He and the staff's confidence continues to rise.

“We got to a point real late last week we felt confident.” — Carr

Olave's latest decision after concussion

Saints wide receiver Chris Olave returned to action in Week 8 after missing Week 7 due to a concussion. He completed a multi-step process to ensure his safety entering last weekend's game.

During practice on Wednesday, Olave wore a Guardian Cap. That rose some questions about whether or not he will wear one during games now. Olave has dealt with multiple concussions over the past two seasons.

Guardian Caps are large, soft-shelled pads worn over football helmets, with the objective of reducing the risk of concussions and other head injuries during play.

NFL players are required to wear Guardian Caps during training camp practices. There's also an alternative to the Guardian Cap mandate. Players are exempt from wearing them if they select one of the six new helmet models that provide equal or better protection, according to the league and the NFL Players Association. They can also choose to wear Guardian Caps during games for the first time during the 2024 season.

The Saints' top WR will not be wearing the specialized cap to his uniform during games, though, according to Nick Underhill
