The Giants should add one free agent to help a young player improve immediately
Would be huge for New York.
The New York Giants and their fans are really excited about safety Xavier Mckinney. It's for good reason. When healthy, Mckinney has been really impressive for New York.
He's a ballhawk, and every NFL secondary needs a safety like that. Their other safety position is where things haven't been so smooth.
As of right now, Jason Pinnock is slated to start opposite Mckinney for the Giants. That cannot be the case when the season opens.
The Giants need to find a different starter as Pinnock's value mostly comes on special teams.
A player like free agent safety Taylor Rapp makes tons of sense for New York. Rapp is an aggressive, downhill safety that is great in the locker room as well.
His skillset would help Mckinney maximize his role as the center fielder of the defense.
NFL.com listed their top free agent list for this cycle, and Rapp is included there.
Rapp is an excellent tackler who never quite developed into the playmaker the Rams hoped when they took him in the second round in 2019. He should still absolutely start in the league.
The two safeties would have balanced skillsets that wouldn't limit the other.
Pinnock would still have a role for New York, but it would fit what he needs to be in the league much better. Not to mention, injuries do happen in the NFL.
The Giants need more depth at safety. Dane Belton could be a solid role player, but they cannot rely on the young safety to make too much of an impact.
Rapp is a proven player with exciting upside.
The Giants should be interested.
