The New Orleans Saints continue to add experienced, notable pieces to their offensive staff under head coach Kellen Moore. The latest is the biggest domino to fall so far.

Doug Nussmeier returns to Saints

The New Orleans Saints are reportedly hiring Doug Nussmeier as their new offensive coordinator under Kellen Moore.

Nussmeier began his pro career with the Saints in 1994. The now offensive assistant was selected in the fourth round by the black and gold.

He was on the roster until 1997 in New Orleans as a quarterback. During his NFL tenure, Nussmeier was primarily a backup QB option for multiple teams. He played in eight regular season matchups with a total of four teams.

As an NFL coach, he began his career as the QBs coach for the St. Louis Rams in 2006. He then spent some time in college football, returning to the pros in 2018 as the tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

Nussmeier stayed with Dallas until 2023, when he joined the Los Angeles Cahrgers' offensive staff alongside Kellen Moore.

Both Nussmeier and Moore were key pieces of the staff for the Philadelphia Eagles this past season, in a Super Bowl-winning campaign.

“I’ve been fortunate to be around Doug, going back to Dallas and L.A. and now here – worked with him in the quarterback room for a long time. I think what makes Nuss (effective) is his experience. He’s been a longtime coordinator in college football at a lot of big-time schools and had a ton of experience there."

“I think he does an excellent job with the details and fundamentals of the position. Hammering that in each and every day, each and every week. Tying the QBs footwork to the pass concepts and making sure we all have the right timing, the anticipation, all that sort of stuff. He does an excellent job preparing those guys.”

Nussmeier's son, Garrett, is currently the quarterback for the LSU Tigers. He is widely expected to be one of the top arms in the SEC this fall and a potential draft pick in 2026.

Moore will call plays for the offense for the Saints, but expect Nussmeier to be quite involved with multiple aspects of the unit.
