The first massive decision for the first-year New Orleans Saints head coach, Kellen Moore, is right around the corner. He has to choose his starting quarterback, and both Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough have made their case so far. With two preseason games left, Moore could name a starter quite soon. He may have gotten some help with his thought process from a franchise legend, too.

Drew Brees shows up at Saints practice

The record-setting quarterback and Saints icon was in attendance for practice on Friday. According to social media videos, he was interacting with players and coaches. There’s no doubt that he could have talked about the QB competition with Moore and other offensive staff members.

Brees has always been a mentor-like piece to the team, even when he was a player. Former Saints quarterbacks like Chase Daniel and Jameis Winston have applauded his leadership skills and commitment to teaching others about the game. For Moore, Brees could be a valuable voice to call on when making some decisions about the offense.

QB competition will come to an end soon

With just a few weeks remaining before the regular season kicks off, it is fair to assume that Moore will announce the starting QB sooner than later. Moore even teased that concept in a recent interview with Kay Adams. The Saints are “close” to naming their starter for Week 1.

New Orleans won’t rush to a decision, but there is also a meaning to naming a starter before the week of the regular season beginning. Teammates can celebrate the choice and rally around their guy. Not to mention, it would most likely allow Shough or Rattler to get more first-team reps in practice or preseason action following the announcement.

No matter what – information and feedback is invaluable, even at the highest level. Brees’ experience and tutelage is probably a useful tool for the young head coach if he decides to put it to use. Nobody wants to see the Saints succeed more than their legendary QB and future NFL Hall of Famer.
