Latest Saints depth chart confirms suspicion about why New Orleans just traded veteran DT Khalen Saunders
Young players must step up on both sides of the ball for the Saints.
The roster for the New Orleans Saints is set to feel a lot more adjustments following this week’s preseason matchup against the Denver Broncos. Regardless, depth chart updates during this portion of the offseason are always a concept to keep an eye on around the NFL.
Latest unofficial depth chart for Saints
The latest unofficial depth chart for Kellen Moore’s team had some notable updates following the Khalen Saunders trade. With the veteran DT moved to Jacksonville, young defensive tackle Khristian Boyd enjoyed a jump up to behind Davon Godchaux, an expected starter for the DL in New Orleans. Luke Fortner, the return in the Saunders deal, is now the backup center on the depth chart.
Keep in mind that this depth chart will still undergo plenty of changes before Week 1. Not to mention, the Saints have not necessarily followed this depth chart in the past weeks when it comes to preseason units and amount of playing time. It’s always fluid.
There are few other takeaways from this depth chart for New Orleans. Some are more obvious than others.
No QB decision yet
Both Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler have had bright moments in the preseason and training camp. With this depth chart update, it backs up what Kellen Moore motioned after the tie against the Jaguars. He has not chosen his starter yet, and it is fair to assume that decision won’t be made until after the final preseason game this weekend for the Saints.
Linebacker jog jam
Nephi Sewell remains ahead of Jaylan Ford and Isaiah Stalbird on the unofficial depth chart. That being said, both of the latter two mentioned have had more of an impact in the preseason so far. Ford is a young option who dealt with injury last season. He had an interception against the Jaguars and moves well for his size. I would be surprised if he doesn’t end up making the active roster.
Jonas Sanker’s spot is misleading
The rookie safety played very well against Jacksonville and seems like a roster lock. Albeit, Terrell Burgess is still ahead of Sanker on this latest depth breakdown. It feels much more likely that Sanker makes the roster over Burgess at this point.
All in all, this depth chart will still undergo changes ahead of Week 1, and plenty of names will be removed as the roster gets cut down.
