The New Orleans Saints are reportedly close to signing veteran linebacker Anthony Barr, according to Dianna Russini. He just must pass his physical, and the deal will be done.

The Saints need the depth at linebacker. They already lost Andrew Dowell to a season-ending injury. Demario Davis has missed some of camp due to an injury, and Peter Werner missed notable time last year while hurt. Behind those guys, there are minimal NFL snaps from the rest of the depth chart.

Two rookies, Nick Anderson and Anfernee Orji, were in line for potential playing time and roster spots. Now, that just got cloudier with the potential addition of Barr.

Of course, it was always going to be an uphill climb for the UDFAs from this past draft. Right now, Anderson and Orji probably sit behind Nephi Sewell and D'Marco Jackson when it comes to getting onto the active roster.

If the Saints add Barr, the two rookies will surely be knocked to the practice squad, considering Ryan Connelly and Ty Summers are both fighting for a spot as well. Those two have minimal, but more, experience than the two rookies at the pro level.

Anderson got some nods last week during training camp, and Orji flashed early on, but their chances will probably be limited now. For the Saints, Barr is an upgrade to the rookies or anyone behind Werner on the depth chart at LB currently, though.
