The New Orleans Saints made a couple of surprising roster cuts on their defense Tuesday. One of those was linebacker Jaylon Smith.
The former second-round pick and Pro Bowler wasn't with the team long, but he had received gleaming reviews from the staff and his teammates. The move came as a bit of a shock to fans, but the Saints always wanted to bring him back on their practice squad. Players can be elevated from that group on game day to play.
Luckily, the Saints got that opportunity. According to Jordan Schultz, New Orleans is signing Smith to their practice squad today.
Smith will be a depth LB for the Saints. He impressed in two preseason games with the team, and Dennis Allen shared positive words about him on multiple occasions.
The veteran steps into a room behind Demario Davis and Pete Werner. D'Marco Jackson, Nephi Sewell, and Zack Baun are the other linebackers currently on the active roster for the Saints.
