The New Orleans Saints caught some extra flack on social media last weekend in their loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. During a defensive stand by New Orleans, Nathan Shepherd made a play that was called dirty by many.

NFL fines Saints player

As Justin Herbert got rid of the football while under pressure, Saints defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd twisted Herbert down in a manner that Chargers offensive lineman Bradley Bozeman did not appreciate. It is impossible to know if Shepherd knew that Herbert no longer had the ball.

The Saints' veteran defensive lineman was fined $11,817 for the hit. That should come as no surprise. The NFL has been consistent in protecting quarterbacks.

Dennis Allen defended Shepherd earlier in the week. He did not think he did anything wrong in making a play on the QB.

"Here's a guy that's trying to wrap the quarterback up. He's on the ground, he has no idea if the quarterback has the ball or not. … There was nothing malicious about that play."

Regardless, Shepherd will have to pay up for the play.
