There was no way the New Orleans Saints weren't going to address the line of scrimmage in the 2023 NFL Draft.
It started from the get-go as the Saints took multiple defensive linemen in the first two rounds and then added a piece offensively in the fourth round.
The additions they made caught the eye of Pro Football Focus who deemed that the work the Saints are now vastly improved in the trenches.
Regardless of what you think of Bryan Bresee, he’s a New Orleans type of first-round pick (uniquely big and athletic defensive lineman), so that was always happening. Isaiah Foskey is a high-floor rotational rusher. And then in the fourth round, the Saints drafted Nick Saldiveri, who can be a swing tackle or even a starter along the interior. It wasn't the flashiest of drafts, but it was one that should shore up the trenches on both sides.
Losing David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle made the need for Bresee immense. Bresee has size and athleticism to go along with versatility as he can line up in several positions across the defensive line. So, Bresee can help with keeping a well-oiled rotation going.
The Saints also lost edge rusher Marcus Davenport in free agency to the Minnesota Vikings. So, bringing in Foskey made a lot of sense with his prowess for getting sacks (set a Notre Dame record with 26.5) and making plays behind the line of scrimmage (recorded 28 tackles for loss in college). Now, Foskey gets to learn from eight-time Pro Bowler Cam Jordan, and hopefully give the Saints another force from the edge.
Saldiveri has experience at tackle, guard, and center so his potential is limitless. He posted a 31-inch vertical jump and a 9'3" in the broad jump at 6'6" and 318 pounds so Saldiveri has size and athleticism on his side. Don't be surprised if he's a starter at some point soon.
The Saints did a very solid job adding to their roster in the draft and are set up to make a serious run at the playoffs.
