The New Orleans Saints are excited about their offensive skill position players. That being said, it isn't often that an All-Pro receiver gets released at this point in the offseason. That's the case for DeAndre Hopkins, though. The Arizona Cardinals cut ties with the veteran earlier today, so any team can now sign him to a new deal.
Jeremy Fowler, an NFL insider for ESPN, listed the Saints as one of the top fits for Hopkins based on need and money. New Orleans has the salary cap to make a move like this one for the wideout.
Chris Olave is the primary receiver, but the Saints could use a running mate in light of Michael Thomas' durability concerns. The Saints don't really do the tear-down rebuild thing, and with a weak NFC South, New Orleans could see an opportunity to pounce. The Saints have a healthy cap outlook at $13.6 million (not that the opposite would have stopped them), and Derek Carr is good enough to potentially entice Hopkins, who can continue playing in a dome and a warm-weather climate. — Fowler
A trio of Hopkins, Olave, and Michael Thomas at WR would be special, especially if Thomas stays healthy this season. Not to mention, depth like Rashid Shaheed, A.T. Perry, among others would be a major improvement for the Saints compared to recent seasons.
An investment like Hopkins would be a risk, but it would also make sense for a team that believes that they can contend in the NFC right now.
