The New Orleans Saints have been amidst tons of NFL trade deadline discussion over the past couple of weeks. Those talks around social media and in league circles won’t slow down anytime soon, either. That being said, the trade narrative around wide receiver Chris Olave may be coming to a close for now, at least.

Saints currently don’t plan to trade WR Chris Olave

According to Dianna Russini, New Orleans isn’t expected to trade Olave ahead of the deadline. He’s expected to remain with the Saints as Kellen Moore attempts to build his offense of the future.

The Saints have already had contract discussions with Olave on multiple occasions, and the young wideout even confirmed that again recently.

“Olave, 25, sounded confident speaking to reporters about the possibility of sticking around New Orleans long term. Not only have he and the team been in discussions about a potential extension for several months, but the club has been connecting with him, he said Sunday.” — Katherine Terrell

New Orleans should try to trade Rashid Shaheed if they’re keeping Olave

With all of these rumors swirling, I have held firm in the belief that the Saints should trade one of two of their top wideouts. Rashid Shaheed is an expiring contract, and it is unknown how aggressively the Saints attempt to extend him this offseason. If they give Olave a new deal, then it feels less likely they find a way to also keep Shaheed in the fold.

Moving Shaheed would potentially net a fourth or fifth-round selection. The Saints traded their fourth-rounder in exchange for WR Devaughn Vele, who hasn’t seen as much playing time as fans hoped for when the team added him to the depth chart. Moving Shaheed in exchange for early day three draft capital would be an overall positive, rather than letting him walk for nothing in the offseason.

Plus, it would not feel in good faith for the Saints to trade both Olave and Shaheed at the deadline. They’re trying to decide if Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough is the future at the quarterback position. Losing both of their best pass catching options, particularly downfield, would be a massive obstacle for either QB this season.

Regardless, New Orleans could look to deal away Shaheed and some other proven pieces in order to garner more draft compensation for their future. Doesn’t sound like Chris Olave will be in that mix, though.
