The NFL has made a major decision regarding a rule change. The "hip-drop tackle" has been outlawed by the league. The New Orleans Saints could be heavily affected by the ruling.
Definition of a hip-drop tackle
(a) grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms; and
(b) unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee.
Saints edge rusher Cam Jordan already made his feelings clear on the rule. He is not a fan of the change.
He won't be the only player to disagree with the iffy rule change. The grey area is massive regarding hip-drop tackles.
Can they be dangerous? Yes. Can they happen without intent from the defender? Absolutely.
Playing defense in the NFL is hard enough. Adding another restricting aspect to tackling manner only makes it harder for players. The NFLPA was outwardly against the rule change, but the owners around the league approved it anyway.
Many players around the NFL are already reacting to the news. It's clear that it will not be popular.
More details to come regarding the massive rule change.
