The NFL draft always brings wonderful new opportunities. At the same time, it also brings competition to every single roster in the league.
For the New Orleans Saints, they attacked a plethora of needs. Veterans will need to continue to make a difference, or their roster spot will be threatened by one of the rookies.
Who are the biggest winners and losers for the Saints after the 2023 NFL Draft?
Winner: Cameron Jordan
Jordan got a lot of help on his defensive line during the draft. That means there will be less focus on Jordan from opposing offensive lines. Jordan was rooting for the Saints to add multiple impactful prospects on the DL during the draft, and New Orleans delivered with Bryan Bresee and Isaiah Foskey in the first two rounds.
Loser: Tre'Quan Smith
Smith has kept his roster spot over the past two seasons due to his blocking skills. The Saints added A.T. Perry during the draft as well as a couple UDFA wideouts. Smith was already slipping down the depth chart, so that slide may continue if other WRs have impressive training camps. Smith will need to impress as a veteran if he wants any playing time this season.
Winner: Juwan Johnson
The Saints traded away backup TE Adam Trautman during the draft in order to move up. They did not draft a replacement for him, either. Accordingly, there is no proven depth behind Johnson on the depth chart at tight end. Johnson just received an extension, and the Saints love his potential in the receiving game. He has improved as a blocker over the past two years, too. He's the guy for New Orleans at tight end for the foreseeable future.
Loser: Mark Ingram
Ingram probably wasn't returning to New Orleans, but the draft cemented that idea. The Saints took TCU RB Kendre Miller in round three to add depth at RB. Not to mention, they had already signed Jamaal Williams to be their backup in free agency. The Saints may roster one other RB outside of Alvin Kamara, Williams, and Miller, but it will be one with special teams ability. Ingram won't be that player.
Winner: Doug Marrone
Marrone is the offensive line coach for the Saints. The Saints drafted versatile offensive lineman Nick Saldiveri in round four of the draft. Saldiveri is a physical gifted OL that can be a ball of clay for Marrone to work with in the future. The coach has helped to develop players like Cesar Ruiz, Calvin Throckmorton, and Erik McCoy, so he has a proven track record in New Orleans.
