The New Orleans Saints suffered multiple losses during Week 7 against the Chicago Bears. Along with a scoreboard defeat, the Saints also lost one of their best lineman for the rest of the season, based on the latest reports. Center Erik McCoy is most likely done for the season.

Saints lose Erik McCoy for the season again due to injury

According to Ian Rapoport, Erik McCoy is believed to have suffered a torn biceps. He is expected to miss the rest of the season following surgery. McCoy left the Saints’ Week 7 game and did not return. Now, we know why. The injury creates another problem on the long-term radar for Kellen Moore’s team.

In four of the past five years, McCoy has dealt with an impactful injury that has affected his availability. In 2023, he started all seventeen games. As Rapoport noted, McCoy played in just seven games last season because of injuries. At this point, it is a trend that the Saints cannot ignore going forward.

McCoy has been one of the top centers in football when healthy during his pro career, but the last handful of seasons have often not worked out in the player or team’s favor. With that, the Saints need to look at the center position during the 2026 NFL Draft and potentially add depth there during free agency.

The veteran center is under contract for the next two seasons, but he cannot be solely relied upon as the only starting option at the position for New Orleans. They will have a better opportunity to cut him after next season due to a lesser dead cap hit.

Backup running back Kendre Miller suffered a torn ACL during Week 7, another huge loss for the offense. Kellen Moore must find ways to improve the running game without Miller now, who has impressed so far this season as Alvin Kamara’s backup.
