The New Orleans Saints had an offensive coordinator target drop out of the running Monday morning. Shane Waldron is headed to the Chicago Bears to be the new OC.
Meanwhile, another coaching shift may take another candidate away from New Orleans. The Saints interviewed Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher last week for their offensive coordinator job.
On Monday, Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan reportedly took the job to be the next Tennessee Titans head coach.
Why does Callahan's move matter to Pitcher and the Saints?
His departure opens the door for a promotion in Cincy for Pitcher. That may be the move that makes the most sense for he and the organization. Promoting him to offensive coordinator would create stability and a sense of consistency for Joe Burrow and the offense.
As for the Saints, they still plan on interviewing Pitcher again, according to sources. It'll be in person after last week's was virtual. He's a popular candidate for OC openings around the NFL.
That being said, it may be an uphill climb to pull Pitcher away from the Bengals if they have interest in giving him the OC spot. He's used to their scheme and staff, and he owns a strong relationship with his players.
Regardless, the Saints have been active with young, intriguing candidates to hire at OC. Keep an eye on Zac Robinson and Jerrod Johnson. New Orleans has legit interest in both of them.
Pitcher is not out of the race for the Saints, but the Bengals will be tough competition for him now, especially.
