The New Orleans Saints made plenty of depth moves during free agency. One of their signings stood out the most, though. They picked up former top five overall pick Chase Young.
Young is a tented pass rusher who has not quite lived up to that draft hype. Now, he is rehabbing from neck surgery. He got the surgery shortly after signing with New Orleans, a decision they were aware of before inking him. Young has been expected to be sidelined into training camp, and a strict timetable for his return has not been announced yet.
Dennis Allen gave an update on Chase Young's return on Wednesday
The update was positive. Allen did not mention any setbacks, and he noted that Young has been in the facility doing everything he's been asked in order to return to action. The Saints will know more in the coming weeks.
This is a great sign for New Orleans. Signing a player – followed by an immediate announcement of surgery for said player can put fans on edge. There is no doubting that.
Regardless, Young seems determined to prove that he can bring value to a Saints pass rush that struggled mightily in 2023.
They were one of the worst units in terms of sacks in the NFC. Allen noted Young's motivation in the press conference as well. The pass rusher has been in the building every day and is steadily doing physical rehab work.
Not to mention, New Orleans already lost pass rusher Tanoh Kpassagnon for the foreseeable future with a torn Achilles. That placed even more pressure on Young to return and perform. He can compete for a starting role.
Overall, this report from Allen is the best that the Saints and their fan base can ask for at this point. Hopefully, Young's recovery continues to go smoothly.
