The New Orleans Saints secondary received some great play in 2023. Paulson Adebo emerged. Tyrann Mathieu had his best year as a Saint. Jordan Howden played good football for a rookie. As for the nickel corner spot, there was some inconsistency.

It's tough to sometimes get a read on how a depth chart will shake out in the NFL. Saints HC Dennis Allen is making it a bit clearer for the Saints defense, though. He named a young player a starter as of now after an up-and-down 2023 campaign.

Dennis Allen names Alontae Taylor the Saints' starting nickel corner as of now

"As we sit here right now, I think Alontae Taylor is that guy [starter at nickel]."

Allen also noted that Taylor's confidence level is good. Taylor had an inconsistent 2023 where he saw himself get benched at one point. For a young player, it's good to hear that he's remaining a strong belief in himself and his abilities on the football field.

"He's approached it the right way. He's working extremely hard at it. He's a talented player… To be too harsh on him for his performance last year, I think, would be a little unfair." — Allen on Taylor

The Saints HC has a lot of faith in his young DB. He should, too. Taylor, at his best, has been quite impressive during his NFL career. In his second year of nickel back play, the hope is that he will take another step forward and find more consistency.

Allen also pointed out that Taylor was very new to the position in 2023. He played outside as a rookie. It's been a learning process.

The staff believes in Taylor, and fans are ready to see him return to the field in 2024.
