The New Orleans Saints are reeling after yet another loss, their sixth in a row. They sit at 2-6, and they were forced to bench their rookie quarterback this past weekend due to the offense's struggles.

Spencer Rattler was starting his third game in a row in place of the injured Derek Carr, but New Orleans turned to backup QB Jake Haener in the second half against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9.

Dennis Allen explains Rattler benching

Allen discussed the team's decision to move to Jake Haener during the third quarter of their loss to Los Angeles.

"[He is a] young, developmental QB that I’m encouraged and excited about, but not quite there yet. You know, he needs a little more time in the oven … a little more time to grow, a little more time to develop, and that’ll come."

— Allen on Rattler

Rattler's reaction

After the game, Rattler was honest about the team's choice to go in favor of Haener in the third quarter and the team's overall offensive performance before that occurred.

“We would go forward and then backward. Forward and backward. So, we all shot ourselves in the foot a little bit just with the little things and the way we played just didn’t win the game.”

“I’m just a team guy, so I’m going to want us to win either way. So, it is what it is…”

— Rattler

Rattler completed 59.6% of 99 attempts for 571 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions over three games. The offensive line struggled in that time, but Rattler had issues on his own as well.

New Orleans has dealt with multiple injuries at the wide receiver position over the last month, too.

Derek Carr is expected to return to practice this week, starting on Wednesday. He has been going through throwing sessions since last week. If he is healthy enough, Allen expects him to start on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers in Week 9.
