Saints nearing contract extension with All-Pro player
New Orleans is close to locking up one of its top veterans with a new deal.
The New Orleans Saints are close to another huge signing.
Earlier this week, the Saints got their quarterback of the future by inking Derek Carr to a four-year deal for $150 million. Now, a valuable weapon for him is close to getting a new deal as well.
Two-time All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas has had progressive talks with the Saints about a contract extension.
Thomas had back-to-back 100-catch seasons for at least 1,200 yards in 2017 and 2018. However, in 2019, Thomas set the NFL record for receptions in a season with 149 and totaled 1,725 yards.
That seems like eons ago though.
Thomas has only played in 10 games (eight starts) in the last three seasons due to ankle and foot injuries which included missing the entire 2021 campaign.
Many thought Thomas would be released based on his contract (signed a five-year deal for $96.25 million in 2019) and his inability to stay on the field. However, an extension can help lower his cap hit which the Saints need desperately.
When healthy, Thomas was as productive as any receiver in the NFL. That's what the Saints are banking on, and if they're right, the Saints' offense could be difficult to stop with Carr on board as well.
