On roster cutdown day in the NFL, some surprising moves are made. The New Orleans Saints made one of those on Tuesday morning. They cut veteran cornerback Bradley Roby.
It's an unexpected move as Roby was projected to get meaningful playing time this season. Now, Alontae Taylor is expected to start in the slot for the Saints and play a major role on their defense.
Taylor had an impressive rookie campaign last season, but he did deal with some rookie inconsistencies. Those have showed up during this year's preseason as well. Many folks expected Taylor and Roby to somewhat 'split' snaps at slot CB, while Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo start outside. That won't be the case now.
Roby had a heartfelt message for Saints fans as the news broke on social media.
The Saints' decision certainly factored in money as well. Roby owned a cap hit just over $4M this season. New Orleans is choosing the lesser expensive route, but they still believe in the talent in their CB room, too.
For Taylor, he will be thrown completely into the NFL fire now. He's an energetic defender that the teams seems to rally around. He'll get plenty of opportunity this season.
