The Los Angeles Chargers made the obvious decision on Friday morning. After a 63-21 loss to the lowly Las Vegas Raiders, they cut ties with head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco.
Staley was promised to be the next great defensive HC when he was hired, but that did not work out. After another disappointing season, he got the boot from the Chargers, and it makes plenty of sense. Los Angeles is now 5-9.
For the New Orleans Saints, last season was a disappointment as they missed out on the playoffs under Dennis Allen. This year, it's been another sloppy performance as they sit at 6-7 after thirteen games of play. They're tied for first in the measly NFC South.
Colin Cowherd had some strong words regarding the Chargers' decision that related to the Saints. He called out New Orleans' lackluster record under Dennis Allen, considering the talent on their roster.
"This feels to me like New Orleans. I got some things about the roster I like… they just don't have the right coach." — Colin Cowherd on Dennis Allen
He's right. Even if Dennis Allen wins the division this season, the Saints are not contenders under him. He's proven that over his career as a HC with multiple franchises.
His head coaching record is 21-45. That is a .318 winning percentage.
Yet, the New Orleans franchise backed him in a major way before this season when they allowed him to pick his staff and his own veteran QB.
Those choices haven't been grand. The Saints have been the definition of inconsistent, but the front office has stayed committed – unlike the Chargers. New Orleans will regret that in the long run, most likely.
