It's the dawn of a new era for the New Orleans Saints as four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr takes over the offense going forward.
Of course, a signal-caller needs to build a bond with his wide receivers. For Carr, getting on the same page with Michael Thomas, who is currently working towards a full return to the field during training camp, just may be the most critical of them all.
Thomas was on the field during the Saints' practice on Tuesday, and he and Carr were able to get some work in.
"When we're talking we're talking the same language," Carr said. "Time on task, and things like that, that'll happen, it'll happen quick because we're veteran guys. Game reps is obviously the most important thing."
That will come in time, of course. But the fact that Carr and Thomas are vibing this early is extremely crucial for the Saints, and it will go a long way in determining their success if Thomas stays healthy.
Carr and Thomas didn't wait until they hit the gridiron to form a relationship. When Carr was introduced back in March, he talked about what it was like chatting with Thomas.
"The first time I talked to him on the phone, I don't think he wanted me to get off the phone, I really enjoyed talking to him, "Carr said while laughing. "I told Mickey, I was like, you talk to Mike Thomas and you feel like you two can go out and face the world.
"I told my wife when I got off the phone, and she was like 'Why are you smiling?' And I was like, I love this guy."
Thomas has only played in 10 games over the last three seasons due to ankle and foot injuries (miss all of the 2021 season). So, the fact he's progressing nicely and will fully return to action soon is a very encouraging sign.
A quarterback and his No.1 receiver have to be in sync on the highest level. Well, according to Carr, he and Thomas are doing just fine in that department.
"If he went out there and ran certain routes right now, I’d know exactly what he was going to do and I’d put it on him,” said Carr. “It’s just cool to have him in the building. Everyone was excited to see him. Everybody loves him here, they love his work ethic, they love his competitiveness, his leadership, the way he plays, the way he practices, the way he prepares.”
If the football gods blessed Thomas with good health, the upcoming season could be a return to glory with Carr under center.
