The New Orleans Saints just fell to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 12, 24-15. The Flacons grab the top spot in the NFC South, and the Saints are now 5-6 on the season.
The offense struggled in the red zone. The defense was gashed on the ground. Following a bye week, nothing had changed for New Orleans. Derek Carr threw a game-changing pick-six to Falcons safety Jessie Bates in the first quarter in the red zone.
Derek Carr joins Philip Rivers as the only quarterbacks since at least 1991 to throw multiple pick-6s in six straight seasons.
The red zone issues have plagued New Orleans all season. They have been one of the worst red zone offenses in the NFL. Entering today, they had scored a touchdown on less than 50% of their trips inside the 20.
The Saints went 0-5 in the red zone against the Falcons. That percentage will continue to plummet. They were ranked 23rd, but that will get noticeably worse.
Carr's lack of consistency in the red zone was a major issue with the Raiders as well.
Two Saints wide receivers leave game vs. Falcons in serious pain
The New Orleans Saints lost wide receiver Michael Thomas in Week 10 before their bye. He is now on injured reserve. In Week 12, players are dropping like flies for the Saints. Wide receiver Rashid Shaheed left in the first half with an injury. Early in the second half, Chris Olave took a hard hit […]
For New Orleans, Carr simply cannot make those mistakes. He has not been able to find open targets when the field shortens, and New Orleans has not done themselves any favors with paly-calling down there, either.
It's yet another bleak statistic in a disappointing first campaign for Carr with the Saints.
