Why Derek Carr already has a head start with the Saints
Derek Carr will now have something he’s never had in his career before joining the Saints.
Derek Carr's career with the Raiders has been well-documented over the past couple of months. It was a bit of a bumpy ride, and that's the simple truth of it.
He could have played much better at times, but his supporting cast did him no favors at times as well. Especially on defense, Carr never had a top unit on that side of the ball to help his offense.
The Raiders were consistently average or worse in terms of scoring defense. As an overall unit, they never ranked better than 20th during his time with the team. With the Saints, that won't be an issue.
The Saints had a top ten unit on defense a season ago. The first quarter of the season was a struggle, but New Orleans quickly got back to their success on that side of the football. The secondary stepped up, and the linebacker play was among the best in the NFL.
For Carr, it will be a sight unseen to have a defense that can contend with the best in his conference. The Raiders never presented him with that, but the Saints have proven hat they can over the past few seasons.
They'll need to make additions along their defensive line and add depth on the back-end, but the talent is undeniable.
Carr has a large task ahead of him with the Saints, considering his deal, but he will already have a head start on success compared to his past.
