The New Orleans Saints made a really smart move early on day three of the 2023 NFL Draft. They grabbed quarterback Jake Haener. Haener, like current Saints QB Derek Carr, attended Fresno State. Derek Carr has been mentoring Haener for a bit, so the selection makes plenty of sense.
Haener was one of the QBs that many scouts viewed as a tier below the first-round guys, but he owns starting potential down the road. Haener was a known leader at the college level, and he played with tremendous grit. As a prospect, his accuracy was the most exciting part of his profile.
Some major media scouts even compared his style to Saints legend Drew Brees. Not to mention, Haener grew up as a Saints fan who owned a Drew Brees jersey. He watched film with Brees recently, too.
Haener had a great quote once the Saints picked him as well. Fans will love it.
“The Saints were my childhood team growing up because I loved watching (Brees) play,” Haener said. “That is just so unbelievable. I literally would wear Drew Brees jerseys, I’d wear Saints beanies. Having an opportunity to go play in New Orleans is literally going to be a dream come true.”
For Haener, he will compete with Jameis Winston for the backup job behind Carr for now. Down the road, he could become the starter, though. The Saints are very excited about the rookie QB.
